Derrick May, born on April 6, 1963, in Detroit, Michigan, is a pioneering artist and a foundational figure in electronic music. He grew up in Belleville, where he met his friends and future collaborators Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. Together, they earned the nickname The Belleville Three, becoming the creators of the genre known worldwide as Detroit Techno. Inspired by drum machines, the funk of Parliament, the classic soul of Motown, and the European electronic music of Kraftwerk, they began experimenting with synthesizers to create a totally new sound. Derrick May's music quickly stood out for balancing a futuristic and robotic aesthetic with a deep emotional and rhythmic charge, forging what he himself called high-tech soul. His innate ability to inject soul into electronic sequences laid the foundations for the development of club culture globally.

Transmat Records and International Success

In 1986, Derrick May took a crucial step in his career by founding his influential record label, Transmat Records, which would quickly become the epicenter of the Detroit sound. Through this platform and under various creative aliases such as Rhythim Is Rhythim and Mayday, he released a prolific series of productions considered today to be timeless classics. Among his masterpieces stands out the revolutionary track Strings of Life, originally released in 1987, which immediately transformed into an intergenerational anthem and a key piece during the acid house explosion in Europe. This track, along with iconic productions like Nude Photo and The Dance, defined the aesthetic of the nascent techno movement. Transmat not only served as a platform for his own releases but was fundamental in boosting the careers of the second wave of Detroit artists, mentoring immense talents such as Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen, and Kenny Larkin.

Although his volume of studio production decreased from the mid-nineties, his impact has never waned.
