The booth shout that accompanies his drops, it's Virji, isn't it, sums up a way of understanding the club: elastic bass, bouncy percussion, chopped vocals, and an openly euphoric energy. Sammy Virji has become one of the most visible faces of the UK Garage revival, connecting British bassline culture with an international audience that has entered the sound through his viral live sets, immediate hooks, and highly recognizable production.

From the bass of Newcastle to the Virji language

Born in London and raised in Witney, Oxfordshire, Virji grew up in a musical environment marked by the record collection of his father, Fayyaz Virji, a trombonist linked to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Before focusing on electronic production, he played instruments like the piano and guitar, and began creating music with GarageBand and Logic. His entry into club music came through dubstep and the Rinse FM tradition, but it was during his university years in Newcastle that bassline and figures like Flava D consolidated his direction.

His first releases, in the mid-2010s, moved in a rawer and more fun area of bassline. At the end of that decade, he shifted the center of gravity towards British garage, with cuts like 'Shapes' and 'Whippet' in the ecosystem of Kiwi Rekords, Conducta's label. In 2020, he released the album Spice Up My Life, a key step in his transition towards a more melodic, luminous, and functional sound, which reached number 7 on the UK Dance Albums Chart.

Mass-appeal garage without losing the club pulse

Between 2022 and 2024, Virji strung together collaborations, remixes, and live moments that expanded his reach. The remix of 'On & On' by piri & tommy, 'Peach' alongside salute, 'Shella Verse' with Flowdan, and the single 'If U Need It' established an identity based on fast grooves, highly memorable melodies, and drops with a huge dancefloor response. His session at DJ Mag HQ, with Flowdan, became one of his public turning points and reinforced an approachable, technical, and expansive stage image.

Then came 'Moonlight', 'Damager' with Interplanetary Criminal, and 'Summertime Blues' alongside Chris Lake and Nathan Nicholson, reinforcing his place between the UKG scene, large-format house, and festival circuits. In 2025, he released Same Day Cleaning, a second album of greater ambition with collaborations from Skepta, Giggs, MJ Cole, Tuff Jam, Chris Lake, Flowdan, Issey Cross, and other key names. His current position combines British club culture, global presence, and a rare ability to turn DJ tools into recognizable songs outside the dancefloor.
