Roots of Hard Techno: From EBM and Mákina to the Current Scene

The rise of hard techno on today's dance floors, characterized by sets that regularly exceed 150 and 160 BPM, represents the evolution of a sound with decades of history. Far from being a new phenomenon, the fast and hard-hitting sound has its roots in Electronic Body Music (EBM) and the Belgian New Beat of the late eighties, genres that established the foundations of darker and industrial electronic music.

The structure of this movement fused the physical, repetitive, and mechanical nature of EBM with the hypnotic cadences of New Beat. This cross-pollination of influences that emerged between Belgium, Germany, and France progressively mutated towards techno, hardcore, and hard dance, sharing a constant obsession with increasing rhythms, speed, and percussive intensity on the dance floor.

In Spain, this development gave rise to a highly unique club culture in Valencia, Catalonia, and Madrid. In the Valencian scene linked to the Ruta Destroy, clubs like Spook Factory, Barraca, Chocolate, and ACTV witnessed the pioneering work of DJs like Fran Lenaers, who revolutionized the DJ booths by mixing synth-pop, post-punk, industrial music, and EBM with a continuous mixing technique unusual for the time, accompanied by names like José Conca.

In parallel, the Catalan scene saw the birth of mákina and hardcore in clubs like Pont Aeri under the reference of DJs like Pastis & Buenri, Nando Dixkontrol, Ricardo F, DJ Escudero, Fran Trax, or Xavi Metralla, while Madrid forged its identity in clubs like Ática, Saratoga, and New World with figures like DJ Pepo. Currently, artists like Adrián Mills and Cloudy translate that same rhythmic urgency to a new generation, proving that the search for physical impact and speed remains the engine of the dance floor.
