The Beginnings of a Legend

Matthias Roeingh, known worldwide as Dr. Motte, is one of the foundational and most influential figures in global electronic culture. Born on July 9, 1960, in Spandau, Berlin, he began his musical journey in the early 80s, immersed in the post-punk scene. However, his true artistic transformation arrived in 1985, when he began DJing and embraced the nascent revolution of synthesizers and drum machines, laying the foundations for the Techno sound in his native Germany.

The Birth of the Love Parade

The greatest milestone in Dr. Motte's biography is, without a doubt, the creation of the legendary Love Parade. In the summer of 1989, under the motto Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen (Peace, Joy, Pancakes), Dr. Motte and his partner Danielle de Picciotto gathered about 150 people to dance along the famous Kurfürstendamm avenue in West Berlin, with the goal of celebrating love and peace through electronic music. This humble demonstration evolved over the years to become the largest cultural and musical mass phenomenon, reaching nearly 1.5 million ravers from all over the world in 1999 around the Victory Column (Siegessäule). Together with WestBam, he produced several unforgettable anthems for the festival, such as Sunshine and Love Parade 1998 (One World One Future).

Evolution and Legacy

Beyond his role as the creator of the Love Parade, Dr. Motte is an immeasurable DJ, record producer, and founder of the Space Teddy label, a key platform for the development of the early trance and techno sound in the 90s. His sets in underground clubs, as well as at major global festivals, are marked by polished technique, tireless energy, and a mix of Techno with a deep message of unity.

Rave The Planet: A New Chapter

In recent years, Dr. Motte demonstrated that his musical activism is still alive by founding Rave The Planet, a non-profit organization whose goal is to preserve electronic music culture and which has succeeded in having Berlin techno recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. With the Rave The Planet Parade, which has filled the streets of Berlin with music again since 2022, Dr. Motte reaffirms his position as a visionary, sound revolutionary, and true embodiment of the free, peaceful, and authentic spirit of club culture.
