Biography of Henrik Schwarz

Between the club and the concert hall

Few producers have shifted the logic of electronic live acts toward chamber, jazz, and orchestral territories as naturally as Henrik Schwarz. His career began in southern Germany and the club culture of the nineties, but he soon stopped limiting himself to the DJ format: the laptop, MIDI controllers, and a very physical way of manipulating sound ended up becoming the center of his own identity, recognizable both at techno festivals and in seated auditoriums.

A deep house language with organic memory

His work grows around deep house, house, and techno, but is always crossed by soul, funk, jazz, minimalism, and contemporary writing. From his first releases for Sunday-Music and his circle close to Moodmusic and Innervisions, Schwarz built a reputation as a meticulous producer, capable of taking the dancefloor to a warmer, more melodic, and harmonically rich zone. Starting in 2002, he accumulated a very broad catalog of productions, remixes, and collaborations for major and independent labels, with credits linked to !K7, Defected, Ninja Tune, G-Stone, Compost, Universal, Sony/BMG, Motown, and Verve Records, among others.

From DJ-Kicks to live performance

the 2006 mix DJ-Kicks: Henrik Schwarz consolidated his international profile and Henrik Schwarz Live from 2007 documented the definitive move from the classic DJ booth to the laptop live act. In 2009, he participated alongside Âme and Dixon in The Grandfather Paradox, a key piece for understanding his proximity to the Innervisions ecosystem and shared projects like A Critical Mass. His signature as a remixer further expanded the reach of his sound: he has adapted material by Michael Jackson, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Boy George, Coldplay, Mary J. Blige, Foals, Mari Boine, Ebo Taylor, and MEUTE, always with a sensibility that avoids simple club functionalism.

Scores, orchestras, and new alliances

Since 2010, his trajectory opened decisively toward composition and dialogue with acoustic performers. The collaboration with Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft gave rise to the Duo project and later to the trio with bassist Dan Berglund, documented in Trialogue. He also developed Scripted & Prepared with Hauschka and Nik Bärtsch, composed for the Berlin State Ballet, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Tonhalle Zürich, and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, and wrote a score for Masse, a production presented at Berghain. His works Instruments, Scripted Orkestra with Metropole Orkest, Plunderphonia with Alma String Quartet, and CCMYK reinforce a unique position: that of a creator who understands electronic music as expanded composition, not just as a dancefloor tool. In recent years, he has maintained that hybrid line with new releases alongside Wesseltoft and performances that alternate between clubs, festivals, and concert halls.
