Dirty bass and Johannesburg groove

On international dancefloors, Kyle Watson's house is recognizable from the very first bassline: hypnotic bass lines, swinging percussion, and sharp sound design that splits the difference between the club and the festival. He grew up in Johannesburg with classical piano and a father involved in the industry, who introduced him to house music in his teens. He began releasing in 2007 and, after years of trial and error, around 2013 and 2014 he found the language that defines him today: a crossover of tech house, classic house, and bass house, with dirty bass and slightly twisted vocal hooks.

Dirtybird, the album, and the first American tours

Signing The Clock to the Seven Days of Dirtybird compilation in 2014 was his gateway to the United States circuit. Tracks like Watermelons, Moments, and Don't Talk took hold on dancefloors across North and South America. In 2018, he released the album Into The Morning on This Ain't Bristol, a deliberately eclectic record with which he allowed himself to go beyond the single; he supported it with the New Ground and Into The Morning tours, with a stop at The Palms at CRSSD. A year earlier, he had been nominated for Best Producer and Best Male DJ at the Dance Music Awards South Africa.

From the Yuma tent to the Ultra main stage

He has remixed Rudimental, ZHU, Oliver Heldens, Justin Martin, Malaa, and, in 2023, Gas Pedal by Sage The Gemini. He has released on Dirtybird, Ultra, Atlantic, Diplo's Higher Ground (the Major Games EP), Gorgon City's REALM (My Level), Spinnin' Deep, and DFTD (The Afterhours). Magic Carpet, with MAY BBY, surpassed twelve million streams on Spotify. After being announced for Coachella 2020 and 2021 and falling off the 2022 lineup, he debuted at Coachella 2023 in the Yuma tent both weekends, to a packed house. He has played at EDC Las Vegas—including Stereo Bloom in 2025—, Lollapalooza, Electric Forest, Dirtybird Campout, and Shambhala. In 2024, he stepped onto the main stage of Ultra South Africa for the first time, in the country where he was raised.

Box Of Cats, No Context, and a British base

In 2016, he co-founded the label Box Of Cats with Wongo and a group of producers aligned with bass house. In 2023, he opened No Context Records with his wife, Tash, home to his own bass-heavy sound; the first cut was Kick Drums. Today he lives in the United Kingdom and maintains a schedule that spans North America, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, with the backing of Chris Lake, John Summit, and Gorgon City. He continues to release dancefloor tracks—Double Dutch, Slow Motion, Dark Side, Keep Control—without abandoning that heavy, weird, and festive house that took him out of Johannesburg.
