The Latvian firm Erica Synths, in collaboration with producer Richie Hawtin, has recently launched Bullfrog Drums. This device expands the line of educational instruments started with the Bullfrog synthesizer, consolidating an ecosystem designed to facilitate the learning of synthesis and rhythmic programming. This same week, the manufacturer released firmware update version 1.1, optimizing the hardware's operational capabilities.
Technical architecture and specifications
Bullfrog Drums operates as a drum machine, sampler, and CV/Gate sequencer. Its sound engine is structured around seven sample-based voices, moving away from pure analog synthesis to offer greater flexibility in audio manipulation. The unit includes 64 megabytes of internal memory and comes with seven factory sound banks designed by Hawtin and the Erica Synths team, allowing for the storage of up to 16 additional user banks. Physically, the device weighs 2.7 kilograms and measures 40.5 by 18.5 centimeters, ensuring portability without sacrificing space on the front control panel.
