DESIREE

An afro house that refuses to be a postcard

In the booths of DC-10 or at Yuma at Coachella, DESIREE does not deliver brochure-style afro house: she blends the pulse of Johannesburg with deep house, soul, and techno until the dancefloor breathes at a different tempo. DJ Mag North America featured her on their cover in 2024 and named her Future Star in 2023; the following year she played both weekends of Coachella, the 20th anniversary of Innervisions at Panorama Bar, and Mayan Warrior at Burning Man.

Ivory Park, Kitchener's, and the European leap

She grew up in Ivory Park, a township in Johannesburg, between her uncle's jazz, Radiohead, and the runways that introduced her to electronic music. At the University of the Witwatersrand—degree in politics, philosophy, and economics, 2018—she got hooked on Kitchener's with Da Capo and went from practicing in shisa nyamas to parties like The Rhythm and Surreal Electronica, where Jackie Queens became her mentor. In 2019 she traveled to Zambia with the Rackless Kazi program; in 2020 she was a finalist in the UltraSA King of The Decks. The European circuit opened up in 2021, with dates alongside Black Coffee and Keinemusik.

Femme Tech, Intersexy, and the MMiNO house

Femme Tech (Bae Electronica, June 2022) introduced her as a producer with the tracks Femme and Psilocybin. Remixes followed for Pussy Power by Keinemusik with Nomi Ruiz, All I Need by LP Giobbi, Thrrr... Phaaa! by Selaelo Selota, King Steps by Disclosure and Pa Salieu, and Four Women by Nina Simone. MMiNO—music, in Sepedi—, a party series launched in 2023 with Sanetran, Dormantyouth, and Kampire, became a platform and released Intersexy at the end of 2024: the title track and Khuluma Nami with Jabulile Majola. In 2026, Macho with Emmanuel Jal was released on Ninja Tune.

An intersex woman, she turned that visibility into part of her work—Boys Club, MMiNO, and Intersexy itself—and maintains a residency on Rinse FM, a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, and sets at Boiler Room, Mixmag Lab Johannesburg, Hï Ibiza, fabric, Glastonbury, Cercle, and DGTL. International booking is managed by Liaison Artists. She remains a DJ before a producer: a selector who reminds us that South African house is dancefloor culture, not a seasonal trend.
