Pete Tong

The voice that turned the dancefloor into popular culture

For over four decades, Pete Tong's musical selection has acted as a radar for club culture: first from British booths and stations, then from BBC Radio 1, and finally as a global benchmark between the club avant-garde and mass audiences. He trained in Kent with mobile sessions, school parties, and local nights, before entering the London circuit that propelled acid house in the late eighties. Soul, rare groove, electro, and early hip hop gave way to house, the axis of his career.

Radio and A&R: the craft of anticipating the dancefloor

In 1991, he took over the dance music slot on Radio 1 and consolidated Essential Selection as a weekly showcase for new releases and new talent. Since 1993, Essential Mix expanded that mission through extended sessions by established and emerging artists, becoming an electronic radio institution. In parallel, his A&R work at London Records and the launch of FFRR helped introduce decisive recordings and careers to the British market, from Lil Louis, Run-DMC, and Salt-N-Pepa to Orbital, Goldie, and LTJ Bukem. He also served as music supervisor on Human Traffic, 24 Hour Party People, and It's All Gone Pete Tong, and collaborated on the soundtrack for The Beach.

Ibiza as a laboratory, classics as an orchestra

His bond with Ibiza includes residencies and parties such as Pure Pacha, Wonderland, and All Gone Pete Tong, as well as recurring performances at clubs and festivals on the island. His sessions are articulated around house, tech house, deep house, and the Balearic pulse, with a broad and narrative reading of the dancefloor. In 2015, a performance for the BBC Proms alongside conductor Jules Buckley transformed club anthems into orchestral repertoire. The success gave rise to Ibiza Classics, an international production presented at venues like The O2 and the Hollywood Bowl and developed in the albums Classic House, Ibiza Classics, Chilled Classics, and Pete Tong + Friends: Ibiza Classics. In 2025, he celebrated its tenth anniversary with a commemorative collection.

New labels for a career still in motion

Co-founder of the International Music Summit and a key figure in the creation of the electronic music division at WME, he received an MBE for his services to broadcasting and music, as well as the 2021 Music Industry Trusts Award. In 2022, he launched the Pete Tong DJ Academy to pass on technique and professional judgment to new generations. In 2025, he opened Places & Spaces, a label dedicated to timeless electronic music for the dancefloor and the soul, and released collaborations such as Apocalypse, Places & Spaces, and La Serenissima. His present brings together BBC Radio 1 and BBC Sounds programs, a selective performance schedule, the international expansion of Ibiza Classics, and the continuous discovery of new music.
